The term, Google search results, is related to Internet search and retrieval of information. Whenever people are looking for information on the web such as on books, cars, cosmetics and dogs to name a few examples, they need to type the keywords relevant to their search in the Google search tab. The search engine will process and examine their keywords with the indexes and will display the results that best match surfers’ information demands.
The web is an exhaustive pool of data pertaining to a broad range of domains. It can be conceived as an open and public book on the world. Google is internationally known to be one of the most performing and innovative search engines with a massive pool of indexes that make Google search results one of the most informative and in-depth searches. However,it seems as though in the past few years people have taken a dim view of Google, social-networking platforms and other web logs such as blogs and chat rooms.
Indeed, many people throughout the world have been victimized, one way or another, by the misuse and abusive use of the web with either the publication of defamatory information or the exposure of their private life. For example, the bullying of adolescents via blogs has been the subject of heighten public and political concerns in many countries worldwide.
Consequently, the public has been concerned, for many years now, on the dangers of these sites and the damaging, defamatory and illegal Internet contents from Google search results and from the web. However, it seems that this fight is ongoing given that these issues are still current major concerns. Many people and companies are presently engaged in a legal and social fight against Google and other webmasters about their privacy terms and their policy regarding the removal of Internet contents, including web pages hosted by the company.
Recently, Google launched a new promote/remove feature that gives the possibility to Internet surfers worldwide to remove web pages for Google search results. The promotion of this new feature has aroused concerns among surfers and search engine optimization experts. Mostly those concerned questioned the impact of this function on the future of search engine optimization, where their aim is to improve the search, rating and ranking of webpages. Hence, the introduction of this feature was seen as a form of unfair competition and bad Internet practices.
On the other side, this promote/remove feature, for people who are not IT literates and knowledgeable, was perceived as a real blessing thinking that it was a solution to the problem of Internet defamation, bullying and other Internet attacks. These people are not conscious that this feature is not a solution but rather a ‘trompe l’oeil’ because when people click on this application, they are not removing the objectionable material from the web. In fact, they are solely removing the webpage from their research results that they are seeing, which means that the page remains on the web and thus can still be retrieved and accessed. This promote/remove feature concerns only personal Google accounts and Google search results and does not affect the entire web search.
